Intro – The Lord of The Rings Games
Over the years from my earliest computer, which was an Amstrad CPC 464 with a green screen monitor, I have played some type of computer game version of "The Lord of the Rings".
Those early games were often no more than a text based adventure and if you were lucky some graphics and the odd sound effect. On a recent web search for LOTR games I came across a site listing around 100 known tolkien games and in that list there were a couple I had played many years ago.
One of the first games I ever played was called "Lord of the Rings: Game One" , a text game where you travelled around using text commands to travel, pick up things, and perform actions. Knowledge of LOTR story was helpful as you identified with the places, people, races, events as you travel around the game.
Since those hubble beginnings computer games have come a very long way in playability, graphics and effects. Around 2004 I came across a newer PC game "The Fellowship of The Ring" by surreal software/black label games. Based more on the FOTR book rather than movies especially the adventures in "The Old Forest" meeting Tom Bombadil and fighting the evil barrow wights made this an enjoyable game that passed a good few hours for me. Check out gamespy and adventurelantern for reviews and more information on this game.
The Internet is a great place for finding mini flash games to play and a couple years back I came across The Lord of the Rings Battle created by eviludy.net. A game with simple graphics but with interesting addictive game play and music that puts you in a feeling of a battle. Ideal game when you have some free time and in mood to battle some orcs!
In the near future I will be looking into some of the newer games based on LOTR such as LOTRO (lord of the rings online), Battle for Middle Earth and LOTR Conquest. Perhaps even get to play them myself and provide some insights on the games and related information.
If you have played any LOTR games from earliest to the more modern high tech why not leave some feedback on your experience in comments below, Thanks.

Great post! I remember playing The Hobbit Amiga game when I was very young. I love the EA Two Towers and Return of the King games (the former being the best in my opinion) and Battle for Middle-earth II is brilliant. I dabbled in Lord of the Rings Online but i found it far too time consuming when I was supposed to be doing work. I will probably get Conquest because I loved Star Wars Battlefront, which is the engine it uses.
