Reading “The Hobbit” is a great introduction to learn about hobbits, wizards, dwarves, elves, dragons, orcs, goblins, wargs and some of the lands that are part of middle-earth.

Below are a few of my own favourite quotes from book, a mixture from the various songs, verses and dialogue available. Do you have any favourite quotes you would like to share? if so please leave in comments, thanks.

Verse of song Bilbo hears Thorin sing as he drifts off to sleep:

“Far over the misty mountains cold, To dungeons deep and caverns old, We must away, ere break of day, To find our long-forgotten gold.”

The moon-letter verse shown on Thorin’s map discovered by Elrond:

“Stand by the grey stone when the thrish knocks, and the setting sun with the last light of Durin’s Day will shine upon the key-hole”

One the many riddles Gollum asks Bilbo in Riddles in the Dark:

“Alive without breath, As cold as death; Never thirsty, ever drinking, All in mail never drinking” (answer:Fish)

Bilbo hears the call of wargs in the woods and feeling afraid says:

“Escaping goblins to be caught by wolves!” (becomes a proverb in time “out of the frying pan and into the fire”

Barely escaping the wrath of Smaug as he runs up the tunnnel with dragon flame behind him:

“Never laugh at live dragons, Bilbo you fool!”
